International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML)

  • India has become International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) certificate-issuing authority.
  • This is a significant milestone in the realm of weights and measures.

About OIML:-

  • The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) was established in 1955 with its headquarter at Paris.
  • It is a standard-setting body that develops model regulations, standards and related documents for use by legal metrology authorities and the industry.
  • It plays a crucial role in harmonizing laws and regulations on performance of measuring instruments, such as clinical thermometers, alcohol breath analyzer, radar speed measuring instruments, ship tanks found at ports, and petrol dispensing units.

OIML Certificate:

  • The OIML-CS is a system for issuing, registering and using OIML certificates, and their associated OIML type evaluation/test reports, for instruments like digital balance, clinical Thermometers, etc.
  • The number of countries authorized to issue OIML certificates is now 13, with the inclusion of India.
  • The other countries are Australia, Switzerland, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, France, UK, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, and Slovakia.
  • It is a single certificate accepted worldwide.

India and OIML:-

  • India had joined the OIML in 1956, and signed the metric convention.
  • India had applied to become OIML certificate-issuing authority in March 2023.
  • This move could help India to increase exports, foreign exchange earning and employment generation.
